How to set up your Pioneer Platform

If you’re thinking about treating yourself to a Pioneer Platform or you already have (good choice!), take a quick read through our top tips for setting it up effectively. From accessories to tie-down straps and mounting options, here’s how to hit the road in style with the versatile Pioneer Platform.

UNDERSTAND THE SPACE YOU HAVE ON YOUR ROOF

The Pioneer Platform comes in different sizes, from 1228mm x 1426mm all the way up to 1528mm x 1236mm. Whichever one you opt for, you’ll want to make a note of the space you’ve got to play with before loading. The Pioneer Platform is compatible with a wide range of Rhino-Rack accessories, from overlanding must-haves to outdoor sports equipment holders. Before you start mounting, it’s worth considering what gear you’ll need for the adventure you’re taking on.

With the Platform, you can attach the Pioneer Recovery Track Side Bracket to mount your Maxtrax Recovery Equipment at a 75-degree angle, allowing you to get out of a bind whenever you find yourself bogged. Heading to the snow? The Pioneer Ski Carrier Bracket will allow you to mount a Rhino-Rack Ski Carrier at a 75-degree angle and frees up space on the top of your Platform for even more accessories to come aboard. To carry shovels, spaces, axes, fishing rods and spades, attach the STOW iT Utility Holder for a superior product for your adventures. Take a look at the whole range of Pioneer accessories.

PACKING SMART

Got your kit? It’s time to start packing. It can be hard to imagine all the gear you’re going to need while you’re away. A great technique for culling is to lay it all out on the driveway. Although you’re likely giving the neighbours a show of what you’ve got hidden away in the garage, you’ll be able to see clear as day what you need and how much space it’ll take up when all packaged together. Sort essentials into one pile, things you want but maybe don’t need into another and unnecessary items into the third.

USE ADVENTURE APPROPRIATE STRAPS

Why you should avoid octopus straps

Using the right straps is also a critical move when it comes to setting up your Pioneer Platform. If you’re short on time, it may be tempting to grab a cheap substitute to strap your load however, this is a risky option. For example, occy straps (otherwise known as octopus straps) should not be used to secure loads, especially if you’re hitting off-road territory. Unfortunately, they have a lot of give and once they’ve stretched enough – as you can imagine – your gear will slide right out across the ground.

What straps should you be using?

The tie-downs you should be going for have two ratings that detail both break strength (amount of weight before strap fail) and working strength (amount of support provided for daily use without damage). We have an extensive range of tie-down straps available, allowing you to fasten and secure your load in the safest and securest way possible. One option is the RTD35P Rapid Straps (RTD35P) which are suited for heavy-duty use. They feature a unique buckle protector that’s made from an injection moulded, TPV rubber that avoids denting or scratching any of your gear. Another option is the Pioneer Pickup Kit (43175). With this kit, you can strap items to your Pioneer system easily thanks to the ratchet straps fitted with loops on the end. Easily installed into the C-Channels of your Pioneer system, you can hit the road in no time at all.

BALANCE YOUR LOAD

One of the most critical and important safety factors is transporting your load with the right weight distribution. Unbalanced loads are an immediate hazard and more often than not, lead to damaged vehicles.

To make sure you’re within your limits, you’ll need to check your manufacturers’ maximum roof loading rating; the maximum amount of weight that can be applied to the roof. This is also referred to as ‘gross vehicle mass (GVM)’. The Pioneer Platform is made from durable aluminium and can save you 20kg compared to a steel roof rack, so you’re off to a good start.

You can double-check your GVM by having a look in your manual and checking your vehicle's weight placard which is usually found in the driver's door opening or by contacting your vehicle manufacturer. After you’ve worked out your vehicle's load rating, check out our load rating calculator.

MOUNTING OPTIONS

Stylish and aerodynamically designed to minimise wind drag and noise on the road, we offer a wide range of compatible mounting options available, depending on your vehicle type. Mounting options include the Backbone, RLT600, RCH & RCL, SX (Sports Bar) and RL (gutter mount). Browse the options and your vehicle type to see which would be most suited to your ride.

When it comes to making space for your adventure, the Pioneer Platform is designed to be tough. Check out the varied sizes here to see which Pioneer Platform is going to best suit your vehicle for your next outdoor getaway.
